Welcome to the site! This is our first official post, expect many more to come this season. To get things rolling, we went out yesterday for a little over an hour. Our idea was to help those of you coming to fish the Mega Bass tourney next week. Honestly, I was excited when Eric asked me to help him get set up on the web because I knew I was going to get out on the lake with him.
If you’re coming to Lake Fork this weekend to fish Ram Mega Bass and want to do well, YOU WILL BE SIGHT FISHING. These fish are on beds, cruising shallow and the water is starting to clear up. The wind has been down the last few days and that has helped as well. As of this post, we stand a good chance of getting some rain before the weekend, possibly Friday, and this might change things. You will want to find the clearest water possible. Two baits you don’t want to be without:
- ZOOM Finesse Worm (Tomato:) wacky rig
- Black/Blue Jig - Paca Craw
I asked Eric how he would approach the tournament with the current conditions:
Troll the banks with a wacky rig, tomato color finesse worm and look for big fish on beds. When you find that big fish, grab the jig! In the hour or so we fished, every. time. he. spotted. a. fish. he had a small black/blue jig -
Paca Craw in his hand. The trick here is patience, keep the bait in strike zone and pay attention.
As fun as slot fish are to catch, they won’t get you a check, they get you a ticket. Eric said to expect a lot of overs and really heavy under fish to come to the scales. I wanted to see some fat unders! Eric had other plans. He wanted to catch a fat over. Truth is, Eric would rather catch every fish he sees while looking for a big fish than focus on catching an under for his web guy. What I learned in the hour I had with Eric on the water is that he just loves to fish.
We continued to cruise the bank with a wacky rig while looking for fish on beds. We found a big fish but Eric said she would be too difficult to catch right now. Maybe he was saving her for a client. I don’t know. While Eric wanted to find that over and catch every fish he came across, I finally called him out. “Eric, show me a fat under. I want to get off the lake.” He finally replied: (SIGH) Oh, you want an under?
Within five minutes of me taunting Eric about the under, he picked this one up, put it in my face and said:
You’re going to need some of these in your boat !
Eric is as confident an angler as I have ever come across. Within an hour and 25 minutes of fishing with the man, I finally got it. He can flat out fish!
